A construction crane at a work site next to a kindergarten in Beijing collapsed yesterday, killing five children.The official Xinhua News Agency said children playing outside were killed by falling bricks as the crane crashed on to the kindergarten in Zibo city, Shandong province, and damaged its roof. Two children and the crane operator were injured and taken to a hospital, it said.

A preliminary police investigation attributed the accident to poor safety measures and managers of the construction company were detained, Xinhua reported.There were about 100 children in the kindergarten at the time. The area has been cordoned off and police were still investigating.[Oct 12, 2008]

Texas Mobile Crane Accident
 
A mobile crane that was removing steel beams to dismantle an old river bridge near Smithville, Texasd became overloaded and toppled Wednesday, killing one worker and injuring another.The mobile crane smashed into a raised basket where the two men were working. One worker was killed when he was knocked off the bridge. The deceased worker fell about 60 feet from the top of the old bridge and landed on construction equipment.
 
Mobile Crane Topples Over
 
The workers were trying to loosen the joints of one beam, or girder, when another beam also became loose and caused the crane to topple.The operator of the crane managed to get out of the way and wasn't injured.  The two men in the lift basket wore safety belts, and the injured worker remained tethered to the basket with his belt after the accident. The crane tumbled from what appeared to a manmade gravel base and landed partly in the water. The bridge being dismantled has been replaced by a new bridge nearby.

Florida Crane Accident a Close Call

Two Florida women were shaken when a crane came crashing through the roof of a Seminole County home on Monday.The crash happened along Lake Drive near Maitland Avenue in Altamonte Springs when crew of workers was using the crane to remove trees from the back yard of the home, and the workers were moving a large branch over the home when the crane collapsed. A woman inside the home at the time of the accident said ceiling tiles hit her in the back. It is belived that the ground that the mobile crane was resting gave way and caused the crane to topple under the load.

One worker was injured after he fell in a crane accident at Vancouver Pile Driving yard The injured worker was tossed 30 feet into the air during a barge crane accident in North Vancouver on July 25, 2008.  Workers were lifting a smaller crane onto a large barge-mounted crane, when one worker tried to shake loose an off-balance load as the operator continued to lift the boom.

When the load came free, it rose suddenly into the air, tossing the injured worker into the air. The man was taken to hospital with injuries to his back and legs. Luckily not more workers were injured.

Another Texas Crane Accident
 
A crane accident occurred outside of Rosharon, Texas in Brazoria County. Local news sources report that paramedics rushed to the scene of a crane accident that occurred at Mammoet, a company that specializes in heavy lifting equipment in Rosharon.  A worker was reportedly hit in the head by a crane holding a bin. The injured worker was Life Flighted to a Houston Hopsital. This crane accident is the second in as many weeks to occur in the Houston, Texas area. A crane collapse at Lyondell killed four workers and injuring dozens of others. [July 21, 2008]
